Although just a few minutes’ drive from the likes of Puerto Banus and Marbella, despite being a favourite destination for residents of the area and holiday makers, it is fair to say that Estepona has generally been overshadowed by the allure and appeal of Marbella with its nightlife and huge choice of restaurants, beach clubs and shopping. While it is not absolutely clear why this sudden change of appeal has occurred, it is believed to be for a number of reasons. There was a recent an international campaign portraying Estepona and 'the garden of the Costa del Sol' which may well of had a major influence, along with the issuing of more building licenses, new leisure facilities and major improvements to the local infrastructure. In the heart of the town the streets are filled with wonderful colours and flowers and the old town is fully pedestrianised, so visitors can stroll around uninterrupted by traffic and the hooting of car horns.
There are more things to do in Estepona than was the case a few years ago. For example, in 2015 they opened the magical Orchidarium where you can view over 1,300 types of orchid all housed within a magnificent domed glass building. This alone has attracted visitors not just from all over Spain but from all over the world.
The town also has its very own version of the famous Miami Wynwood Walls with the Route of the Murals. Like Miami you can see wonderful art on the sides of buildings and along the street. It really is a cultural treat and again something that attracts many new national and international visitors to the town.
Estepona also boasts some of the best beaches along the Costa del Sol with chiringuitos along the paseo (promenade) and bars and cafes along the other side of the road. Underground parking makes it easily accessible and the second line beach is where you will find dozens more restaurants, cafes and boutiques.
